Berkshire Mountain Distillers
Berkshire Mountain Distillers is Berkshire County’s first legal distillery since the times of prohibition. Operations began in an old barn and lasted for years, but they are now located in Sheffield and have tastings, tours, and retail options. The distillery has a grain-to-glass philosophy and everything is sourced locally to be made in small batches on site. They produce Greylock Gin, Ethereal Gin, Ragged Mountain Rum, Ice Glen Vodka, Berkshire Bourbon, and New England Corn Whiskey (they’re all excellent). The blend of art and science going into every product is pretty evident. They’ve received many awards internationally and are even available in 19 states around the country.
When visiting Sheffield, it is worthwhile to actually go into the retail location as opposed to just getting a Berkshire Mountain Distillers drink at a local bar. The tours take visitors through the production process of the artisanal spirits. Those who go on a tour will be allowed handling of raw materials, smelling the spirits at various stages of creation, and taste testing the finished products. The tours take place on Fridays and Saturdays and can accommodate larger groups—up to 20 people per tour. Even if you don’t go on a tour, there are complimentary tastings, merch, and bottled spirits in the retail space.
Under 5 minutes up the road, is The Pass, a fully vertically integrated, adult use, lifestyle cannabis dispensary. Their philosophy of turning nature into culture fits in seamlessly with the Berkshire County aura and is a really beautiful spot that is worth checking out.
