Our Review

Race Brook Falls is a scenic hiking location in Sheffield, MA. It’s off of Route 41 and leads to a gorgeous waterfall. The waterfall itself actually has three levels, which may go unknown to those who are unfamiliar with the area. It’s also oftentimes said that the waterfall has a tropical ambiance due to lush vegetation, water dancing over rocks, a handful of pools, and the serenity of the location. It is in the middle of a generally quiet forest, adding to the feeling of zen. When the snow and ice come around, the area is transformed into a beautiful daydream-esque site. Although it is not always a robust, raging waterfall, the views certainly do not disappoint.

Visitors tend to enter the trail via a pulloff on Route 41, where an informational sign is present. Following the pat-down path, hikers encounter some streams and open areas initially. Eventually, this takes hikers to a dense pine tree forest, which creates a more shaded area. From here, there are trails that take hikers either to the base of the waterfall or to some of the higher tiers (a more intense trek). Once at the falls, visitors can take a dip in the pools, take in picturesque views, and explore more of the surrounding area. The summit of Mt. Everett can also be hiked to from the falls.

If you need a place to stay or grab a bite to eat, the Race Brook Lodge is right next door to Race Brook Falls. The lodge is very rustic and serves delicious food at The Stagecoach Tavern, which is on site. It’s a peaceful getaway that celebrates Berkshire County nature and culture.
